Fun Strokes II Handwriting Club K-1st Grade

Program Registration

Fun Strokes programs are a series of small group sessions that span over six weeks.  They are offered as after school clubs and summer clubs.  Fun Strokes programs were designed for any child at risk for a deficit in written communication skills.  We offer two programs, Fun Strokes, and Fun Strokes II.  Fun Strokes is designed for preschool-aged children who have yet to master pre-writing strokes, the prerequisite to handwriting.  It is based on the innovative Fun Strokes pre-writing curriculum and helps children get ready to write.  Children must learn how to form pre-writing strokes, before letters, to be able to write efficiently.  Fun Strokes II is designed for children in kindergarten through 1st grade who struggle with learning how to write or handwriting skills.  Both programs were developed by me, a pediatric occupational therapist with over 20 years of experience working with children. Each program is facilitated by a licensed occupational therapist or a certified occupational therapy assistant.

Testimonial

“My 5-year-old son will be going to Kindergarten next year and was in need of some assistance with his overall handwriting skills (including drawing straight lines, shapes, letters, and numbers).  When I saw the advertisement for Fun Strokes, I really wanted him to participate in hopes that his writing skills would improve.  This program did just that and it helped with his self-confidence.   His Pre-K teacher noticed a difference before she was even aware that he was attending Fun Strokes.  I would definitely recommend this program for students who need that extra boost!”

Who should participate in the Fun Strokes Program?

Fun Strokes programs were developed for any child at risk for a deficit in written communication skills.

Why should I enroll my child in the Fun Strokes Program?

Ensuring that your child has had adequate preparation for kindergarten is key for academic success.  There are many factors that may put a child at risk for having difficulty learning how to write in school.  Some children may have a lack of exposure or opportunities to build fine motor skills.  Some children may have fine motor, visual perceptual, or visual-motor delays.  Some children may have difficulty with coordination and or motor planning.  Pre-writing skills are the foundation of handwriting skills.  When children enter kindergarten and are taught to read and write, it is important that they have the foundation they need to be successful.  Writing plays a huge role in literacy and needs to be developed just like reading.  Fun Strokes is an innovative pre-writing program purposefully designed to address all facets of fine motor skills. The program was created for children of ALL abilities. It is geared to help children build the foundation they need for handwriting readiness in kindergarten and beyond.

What do you teach in the Fun Strokes Program?

The Fun Strokes program incorporates a specialized curriculum combined with therapeutic methods and activities to strengthen the skills needed for handwriting readiness.  Handwriting is a very complex task that requires the integration of various underlying skill sets. Program objectives incorporate all facets of fine motor skill development which include fine motor control, grasping patterns, motor planning, bilateral and visual-motor integration, in-hand manipulation, visual perception, proprioception, sustained attention, and sensory awareness of the arms and fingers. Fun Strokes emphasizes and addresses pre-writing strokes, the foundation of all letters, through playful and engaging activities. In order for your child to receive the greatest benefit from our program, homework is assigned to each participant.  Reinforcement at home is paramount and expected each week. 10-15 minutes, 3-5 times a week is ideal.

What age group is the Fun Strokes Program designed for?

4-year-old to 5-year-old children who are currently in Pre-K or slated to begin Kindergarten the upcoming school year.  Each participant is assessed via the therapist’s clinical observation of fine motor skills during the first session.  Pre-writing foundational skills are then addressed over the course of the program.  Parents are provided with a progress summary at the end of the program.

Is the Fun Strokes book and magnet pack included in the cost?

Yes, the Fun Strokes book and magnet pack, which retails for $44.99, is provided to Fun Strokes Club participants at no extra cost.

Is your child a Fun Strokes II candidate?

  • Does your child hold their pencil with an awkward grasp?
  • Is handwriting a non-preferred task for your child?
  • Does your child struggle with forming letters and/or numbers correctly?
  • Does your child’s teacher complain of difficulty reading your child’s handwriting?
  • Do you have trouble reading your child’s handwriting?
  • Does your child print letters that vary in size?
  • Does your child write too big or have trouble remaining within the lines?
  • Does your child squish letters or words together?
  • Does your child’s writing drift away from the margin as they progress along a page?

If some of these issues resonate with you, your child may benefit from the Fun Strokes Program.

Why should I enroll my child in the Fun Strokes II Program?

If your child is in kindergarten or first grade and experiencing handwriting difficulties, now is the time to address it.  These are the crucial years where children need to learn how to write and hopefully develop mastery.  Ideally, handwriting should be automatic for children by the time they enter third grade.  Meaning they no longer need to think about how to form letters, they just do it, much like riding a bike.  When children enter third grade, they are no longer learning to write but are writing to show what they have learned.  Address handwriting difficulties as early as possible and before the demands increase.

What do you teach in the Fun Strokes II Program?

Fun Strokes II utilizes a multi-sensory approach to handwriting. Children will engage in therapeutic activities that build core strength, motor planning, positioning, bilateral coordination, visual-motor integration, grasp, and fine motor control.  The Fun Strokes II Program offers tactile, visual, auditory, and kinesthetic feedback to tap into all learning preferences.  Each session is jam-packed with fun and interactive activities.  Students are taught stroke sequence, letter formation, line orientation, and written organization skills to improve overall legibility. In order for your child to receive the greatest benefit from our program, homework is assigned to each participant.  Reinforcement at home is paramount and expected each week. 10-15 minutes, 3-5 times a week is ideal.

What age group is the Fun Strokes II Program designed for?

Fun Strokes II is designed for children who are in grades K – 1st.  Each participant is assessed via the therapist’s clinical observation of fine motor skills during the first session. Key legibility components are emphasized and addressed over the course of the program.  Parents are provided with a progress summary at the end of the program.
